In a cold winter day, the furnace is not heating the home. Since a service call costs almost CAD 100 for most HVAC contractors, it is a good idea to go through the following checklist before a service call.

  1. Check the programmable thermostat (set to ‘Heating‘ and correct temperature?)
  2. Check the power switch and circuit breaker to furnace (set to ‘ON‘?)
  3. Check the furnace filter (is it dirty? when was it last replaced? It is a good idea to check the filter monthly and replace it if it is dirty as it would restrict airflow and affect the furnace performance.)
  4. For high-efficiency furnace, check the condensation drain tube (water flow problem?)
  5. Check vents throughout the home (all vents should be open for heating season; otherwise, it would restrict airflow and affect the furnace performance)
  6. Check both air inlet and exhaust vents outside the home are not blocked by snow or ice (remove the snow or ice if it is blocking the outside vents)
  7. Check the light at the front of furnace cabinet (if it is blinking, the blinking pattern presents a status/error code; Check the furnace owner manual to identify the status/error code and suggested solutions)

After checking above items and the furnace is still not heating the home, it is time to contact the HVAC contractor. You may provide the status/error code to the contractor.

Money Saving Tips:

  • Check furnace filter every month; replace the filter if it is dirty.
